The further development of NAGiS started in 2017

The Environment and Energy Efficiency Operational Program (EEEOP) of Hungary provides the source for the further development of the National Adaptation Geo-information System (NAGiS). The climate vulnerability assessment methodology will be developed, the climate impact assessment of the most important Hungarian economic sectors and critical infrastructure will be carried out among other tasks.

The Geological and Geophysical Institute of Hungary (MFGI) established and published the basic infrastructure of NAGiS, with the support of the European Economic Area (EEA) Grants Fund between 2013-2016. However, for better usability further improvements are required. In November 2016, a grant of HUF 400 million was awarded for the project plan of the further development of the NAGiS from the 1.1.0. measure of the ‘1. Adaptation to the effects of climate change’ priority axis of the EEEOP. The project is implemented by the Hungarian Mining and Geological Survey (MBFSz).

This development process is a priority project of the EEEOP. Its objective is to create a decision support toolbox for policy makers and municipalities, that is based on the improvement of existing databases, methodologies and assessment modules of NAGiS. The expected results will help climate policy and sectoral planning, the elaboration of decision-support studies for policy making, climate strategy planning of municipalities and regional authorities, laying down professional foundations for climate policy objective setting. Furthermore, the results may help raising climate awareness and the dissemination of relevant knowledge.

The project will run by 2019. The effects of climate change on several Hungarian natural resources and on critical infrastucture will be investigated, the mapping of their climate vulnerability will be carried out. The effects of climate change on social policy and the economic development will be analysed. Planning and evaluation methods of climate protection impact assessment will be developed. The NAGiS online management information system and a municipal decision preparation portal will be created. The wide dissemination of the results is an important task of the project as well.
